An Unforgettable Sunrise from Hotel Iturregi

We all know Spain for its sunny beaches and vast coast-line, but often the best part of it is also the most overlooked. I am talking about the Basque Country – a mysterious and mountainous region in the North of Spain.

I have been privileged enough to spend a weekend at one of the most remarkable hotels I’ve ever been to. Keep reading to understand why, although I think the pictures speak for themselves!

Perched on a hill with views of the sea, this traditional-looking Basque home keeps a secret. From its windows, sunrises turn orange beyond the lighthouse. The beauty of the landscape is so flattering you will only whisper, hoping not to disturb the peace of the surroundings.

Hotel Iturregi is a few minutes driving distance from Guetaria, a small fishing village know for its many restaurants and lively tapas bars. These are the most beautiful “few minutes” you can ever drive. The narrow path will take you through vineyards until you discover the old farmhouse-turned hotel.

The rooms of the hotel have been named after nearby landmarks. Our room was Jaizkibel – a little mountainous area of the Basque Country. The interior design was so pretty – a mix between classic, elegant and contemporary. The green color palette was very harmonizing. I loved every bit of it which is a problem because when I go back I don’t know if I’d like to see a new one or have the same incredible experience I had at Jaizkibel.

Our room had a little terrace were to stare at the horizon. From the window, all you can see is the green landscapes of the Basque Country and the unsettled northern sea.

Breakfast was the ultimate amusement. The menu is served to your table and it’s filled with delicacies to wake your senses. I would recommend you to plan plenty of time for breakfast because you’ll never want to leave!

It is not often that you find such special places – the ones you’d like to go back to over and over again. Definitely up in my top choices for 2018. Highly recommended.

Spent many a happy holiday in the Basque country, including Getaria which we love. Hope you got to visit the Balanciaga museum and try some of the town’s great restaurants, including our favourite Elkano.
